Making The Most Of Your Holiday – Things To Do In Rome

by Robert M Freeman

Rome, also known as the Eternal City is Italy’s capital city. The city is known for the Vatican City, Sevel Hills, and La Dolce Vita. Rome is a beautiful city to visit, mostly because of its many historic sites that have led to Rome’s Historic area being included in the World Heritage Sites.

The most horrible time to go to Rome is August, as for two weeks in August all the locals leave the city for their own holidays; hence most establishments are shut down. Additionally the weather is very hot at this time, so it’s a good idea to go see the city in fall or spring. The greatest time to go to Rome is May; particularly if you wish to do lots of sightseeing, as all public landmarks are open to public for free for one week in May.

While in Rome, there are a few historic locations that you must visit. These comprise the Colosseum, where you will find an incredibly lengthy queue, although if you plan ahead you can skip this. To do this, you can either get a tour or get a day pass for 10 Euro from the Roman Forum.

The Pantheon is an amazing work of architecture. It was built as a temple for all the gods, and is well known because of its very large dome. It is a functioning church, so do show respect, and inside it you will see signs of the former bronze ceiling which was melted down to make bombards to fortify Castel Sant’ Angelo. If you happen to be in Rome in the rainy season, make sure you visit the Pantheon to see rain falling through the open dome ceiling, as it is a unique and extraordinary site.

The Roman Forum was the seat of the Roman government which was, at one time, the most powerful government in the world. Entry to the forum is free, but it is highly recommended you get an audio guide as it will elevate your experience of standing at the centre of the Roman Empire.

When in Rome, make sure you visit several of the few hundred churches in the city. The only thing to watch out for is your outfit as you might be denied entry into nearly all the churches with nude midriffs, naked shoulders, or exposed knees. The ideal thing to do is to have on pants or a long skirt, and make sure you are completely, as you will only be denied entry into the church right when you are just about to go inside after standing for hours in the queue to get the pass.. This is especially true for Saint Peters church, but you may be able to see a vendor selling shirts and pants right outside.

St. Peter is where the Pope lives. It is the seat of the Catholic Church, and is part of the Vatican. It is also said to be the most beautiful and the largest church in the world. There are very long queues, but it does not take a long time for you to get in.

When in Rome, be prepared to do a lot of sightseeing, especially for museums, churches, and historic sites. It is an amazing city, and definitely one that needs to be visited once in a lifetime.
